Kooyhaven hydrogen filling station under development
A new hydrogen filling station in the Dutch city of Den Helder brings sustainable transport in North Holland one step closer.
Together with the Port of Den Helder, ENGIE, Damen Shipyards, and others, we will develop a hydrogen refueling station for maritime and road transport in the Den Helder region. For this project, the parties have been awarded a subsidy of nearly €1,4 million through the Demonstration Scheme for Climate Technologies and Innovations in Transport (DKTI). This scheme implements agreements from the Energy Agreement (2014), the Climate Agreement (from 2019), and the Sustainable Fuel Vision.
Double filling points for road and ship transport
Two hydrogen filling stations will be built in Kooyhaven. One station will be used for passenger vehicles and trucks, and the other at Kooyhaven along the North Holland Canal will be used for hydrogen refueling for ships.
Hydrogen ship
The project offers more than just a hydrogen filling station. Damen Shipyard develops a hydrogen ship that will be offered to a pool of potential users. This will Port of Den Helder: will be using this ship. The aim is to have the hydrogen generation, electrolysis, and transport chain, along with the fueling station, fully operational by 2021. The hydrogen-powered ship is expected to be ready in mid-2020.
Emission-free on the Wadden Sea
The hydrogen refueling station could play a significant role in emission-free shipping on the Wadden Sea. The consortium expects hydrogen to be an attractive option for other initiatives as well. For example, the activities of service vessels, offshore suppliers, and personnel transport to and from offshore installations from Den Helder could also be made more sustainable. The hydrogen refueling station will also enable the sustainability of Royal Netherlands Navy vessels.
Hydrogen ambitions
New Energy Coalition is one of the partners in the project. Together with the Ontwikkelingsbedrijf Noord-Holland Noord and a number of municipalities we are working on an ambitious hydrogen program for the region which is aimed at jointly and simultaneously organising the supply and demand of hydrogen for mobility.
Collaboration is essential to prioritize projects that contribute to a rapid breakthrough of the hydrogen economy. According to the parties involved, this project is a key building block in the region's ambitions to create a hydrogen value chain. The project is also included as a key pillar in the recently presented proposals for a Regional Deal for Den Helder.
