HyDelta hydrogen progress report for Minister Jetten

Today, during the Wind Meets Gas symposium in Groningen, Minister Rob Jetten (Climate and Energy) took the interim reportof the HyDelta hydrogen research programme from project leader Julio Garcia (New Energy Coalition). This report on the first phase (HyDelta 1) presents the results of much-needed research into the large-scale application of hydrogen in the transport and distribution of the gas within existing infrastructure. The research programme has since been continued in HyDelta 2, the results of which are expected in mid-2023.

Research into the transport and application of hydrogen

At the initiative of Gasunie and Netbeheer Nederland, the HyDelta consortium was formed in 2020, consisting of parties with extensive experience in researching and testing the transport and application of hydrogen. The research programme focuses on an integrated approach to solutions for the transport and use of hydrogen. Directly applicable research is central. The results from the programme are published regularly and are openly available.

The report presented today presents the findings of 37 studies conducted in HyDelta 1. The research and its results are attracting interest both domestically and internationally.

HyDelta 2 will further explore the economic and technical integration of hydrogen gas into the national gas transport and distribution system and will be expanded to include research into its social and environmental aspects.

About HyDelta

HyDelta is a national collaborative programme focused on research into aspects of hydrogen transport and application within the existing natural gas infrastructure, with a focus on safety and economic feasibility. The programme maps current and proposed Dutch plans. The research focuses on short-term applicability.

The HyDelta consortium is formed by: TKI Nieuw Gas, Gasunie, Netbeheer Nederland, New Energy Coalition (coordinator), TNO, Kiwa, DNV and Hanze University of Applied Sciences Groningen.
