Response: Extinction Rebellion protest at Zernike Campus
Today, Extinction Rebellion/Code Rood took action on Zernike Campus. The action focuses on Shell's perceived influence on the University of Groningen (RUG) and the Hanze University of Applied Sciences Groningen. In the projects en collaborations in which we operate, these parties often involve many and very diverse parties.
The coalition
New Energy Coalition is a network and knowledge coalition committed to a smart and successful transition to the sustainable energy system of the future. We stimulate joint activities and use our organizational strength to advance energy projects. We focus on education, research, and innovation. This requires all parties to join forces. This is what happens within the coalition. Governments, both in The Hague and Brussels, generally require collaboration with private parties for funding scientific research. This is known as co-financing. We bring this co-financing together and take the lead in formulating the relevant research questions.
(Co)Financing
Scientific research—both fundamental and applied, especially when privately funded—is subject to critical review—which is both useful and necessary. However, it would be undesirable (and unsustainable) to disqualify the accumulated and available knowledge and expertise of private parties for this reason. We are convinced that it is logical and right to continue using the acquired knowledge, expertise, and available infrastructure as a stepping stone to a new energy future, as part of the enormous challenges we face in the global energy transition.
A system transformation such as the energy transition that the world is facing today can only be successful through cooperation and commitment from all parties involved.
