Scenario report shows strength of Dutch hydrogen economy
The Hague, July 2 – Today, Hans de Boer, chairman of the Confederation of Netherlands Industry and Employers (VNO-NCW), accepted a research report on the socio-economic impact of hydrogen in the Dutch energy system in 2050. At the Malietoren in The Hague, researcher Eise Spijker of JIN Climate and Sustainability (JIN), director Hans Coenen of Gasunie, and Professor Ad van Wijk (member of the advisory committee) presented the report on behalf of New Energy Coalition. The research was commissioned by Gasunie.
Three hydrogen scenarios
The study presents three hydrogen scenarios, namely:
- The situation where the Netherlands achieves its climate goals but does not implement a more active hydrogen strategy within the energy transition
- The situation where the Netherlands invests in a green hydrogen economy with a high degree of self-sufficiency in both consumption and production
- The scenario in which the Netherlands explicitly opts for an open hydrogen economy in which a significant portion of the hydrogen is imported.
The research results
Although there are still many uncertainties between now and 2050 in technological and socio-economic developments that could influence the results.
