Launch of EU project IANOS: fossil-free islands
On October 7 and 8, the EU innovation project IANOS (IntegrAted Solutions for Decarbonization and Smartification of Islands) officially launched online. This innovation project focuses on making energy processes (generation, distribution, and consumption) more sustainable within island communities for the development of fossil-free islands.
Three lines of research
The innovation project distinguishes three lines of research:
- energy efficiency and network support
- CO2-free energy production through electrification and emission-free fuels
- supporting the local community in their sustainable energy processes
Participating European islands
The islands of Ameland (Netherlands) and Terceira (Portugal) are the first pilot projects. After the initial research phase is completed, the rollout will follow on the islands of Bora-Bora (France), Lampedusa (Italy), and Nisyros (Greece).
About IANOS
Islands serve as a test environment for energy transition in IANOS. Innovative solutions are tested for technical and economic feasibility, while citizens and stakeholders from two pilot islands are involved in the process. The findings are shared and applied to three "colleague islands" to develop a business model for energy transition across all European islands. This approach accelerates the transition to energy independence and ecological resilience.
The project involves a total of 34 project partners from 9 European countries. New Energy Coalition is one of the project partners. The IANOS project is funded by the EU's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program.
